How we care for someone who has died
Choosing a funeral director also means choosing who will look after the person who has died. We believe families should know where their relative is, who is caring for them and what happens while funeral arrangements are being made.

Coming into our care
When the necessary medical or legal formalities allow, we arrange for the person who has died to be brought into our care. Our team will explain the collection or transfer arrangements and answer practical questions before we attend.
You can call before you have registered the death or made funeral decisions. Read what to do when someone dies.
Cared for locally in Heathfield
We use our own private mortuary facilities in Heathfield. The people arranging the funeral are close to the care being provided and can answer your questions directly.
If the coroner is involved, your relative may initially be at a designated mortuary. We will explain what must happen before they can come into our care.
Care, dignity and identification
We treat each person with respect throughout their time in our care. You are welcome to ask how we confirm their identity, look after their belongings and keep your family informed.
Our NAFD membership brings professional standards and accountability to this work.
Visiting someone in our care
Some families want to spend time with the person who has died and others do not. There is no right or wrong choice. Visits are by appointment: we will discuss any preparation that may be appropriate and arrange a suitable time.
Occasionally there may be medical, legal or practical reasons why a visit needs to be delayed or discussed first. If that applies, we will explain it.

Clothing and personal belongings
Families can usually choose clothing and may wish to provide personal items. We will explain what can be placed in the coffin, particularly where cremation rules affect certain materials or objects. Please discuss valuable or irreplaceable belongings with us first.
You can ask us about their care
You are welcome to ask where your relative is, what has happened or what happens next. You do not need to know the right words or have made any funeral decisions.
